Never Pay €1,000 for a Job: 7 Signs of a Recruitment Scam
Recruitment fraud takes millions of euros every year from the people who can least afford it — workers trying to build a better life abroad. The scams change names, but the tricks are always the same. If you remember one rule, remember this: a real employer pays to hire you — you never pay to be hired.
1. They ask for money before a contract
"Registration fee", "file opening", "visa reservation" — whatever the name, payment before you have a signed contract from a verifiable employer is the single biggest red flag.
2. The job is "guaranteed"
Nobody honest can guarantee employment. Hiring is always the employer's decision. "100% guaranteed job" is a marketing line for taking your money, not a promise anyone can keep.
3. The salary is too good for the job
If cleaners are being offered €3,500 in a country where cleaners earn €1,100 — it is not your lucky day, it is bait. Check what the job really pays in that country before you get excited.
4. Everything happens only on WhatsApp
Real companies have a registered name, an address, a website, and people you can find. If the "employer" exists only as a WhatsApp number and a logo — walk away.
5. They sell "invitation letters" or "demand letters"
A demand letter is a document between an employer and a licensed recruiter — it is never a product for sale to workers. Anyone selling "letters" directly to you is selling paper.
6. Urgency and pressure
"Only 2 places left, pay today!" Scammers create panic because panic stops you from checking. A real vacancy survives a few days of your questions.
7. They ask you to send your passport
Photos for an application are normal at the right stage — but sending your physical passport, or paying someone to "hold a visa slot" with it, is how people end up trapped. Your passport stays with you.
How to protect yourself
- Verify the company: registered name, address, website, reviews.
- Get everything in writing before paying any legitimate cost (embassy fees, translations).
- Compare the salary with normal wages for that job and country.
- Use sources that check listings before showing them to you.
That last point is exactly why we built this site: every listing in your Job Pack is checked so you don't apply into a trap.
